Fall Makeup Essentials
Lucky for me, one of my best friends is a talented makeup artist; so when I attend an event, I can depend on a qualified professional to guide me through my beauty routine. Whether it be applying makeup for me or simply sharing her tips over the phone, she has saved me from some faux-pas and has taught me how to highlight my best features. Today, Jolie avec Amélie shares seasonal makeup tips with Mother Miser readers so that you can avoid wasting your money on the wrong products.
Given the change of season and inevitable fade of our sun-kissed skin, it’s time to embrace a new color palette for fall. For a makeup junkie like me, it is the perfect opportunity to explore new trends and change up my makeup routine, just as you would with your wardrobe or hair colour.
This being said, I have compiled a list of must-haves (or must-try) for this season.
FACE: Coverage is usually dependent on time of day and occasion. If you are looking for daytime coverage, try a little concealer and a tinted moisturizer. BB creams are great for daytime and are very affordable. For an evening look or formal event, apply a makeup primer beforehand to extend the wear of your makeup. The Smashbox collection offers many different options for various skin types. Now would also be a good time to go match your skin to a foundation/press powder as your skin might be lighter than it was a month ago. Go to your nearest cosmetic store and approach a sales person for recommendations or to test the products. Who knows, you might even get a free makeover out of it!
CHEEKS: A little bronzer goes a long way in my books! Again many different tints are available depending on your skin tone. I like bronzers because they give you an overall healthy glow. However, if you are looking for a more youthful look, apply a pink blush on the apple of your cheeks; you’ll look like you spent some time outside. Try MAC’s powder blush“Frankly Scarlet”, $20.
LIPS: RED RED RED! Red lips have been back in full force for some time, but this fall a more mulberry/wine red are in so try a red with a darker undertone. Make sure that lips are well exfoliated before applying. Then, get your hands on a long-lasting lip liner. My favourite: Sephora‘s, Retractable Waterproof Lip Liner in “Deep Red” ($12). Cover the entire lip with the liner. Then, for a longer-lasting effect, apply translucent powder on the lip before applying that perfect lipstick, or shimmery gloss for a night on the town.
EYES: When it comes to eyes, it all depends where you’re heading. If you decide to go with a lighter lip, then don’t be afraid to go darker on the eyes, or vice versa – unless, of course, if you’re Nicki Minaj. For fun, try a plum mascara (Benefit’s BADgal Plum, $19). For added drama, add a coat of black mascara on the outside edge of the upper lashes. This technique will give you that added pop, especially for hazel/green-eyed ladies!
If you are unsure about spending the money on some of these trends, begin with a less expensive line to test-drive before committing to that emerald green eye shadow or that bright red lipstick. In this case, check out Wet and Wild or Elf.
Whatever you do, have fun experimenting with colors this season. If you don’t like it, simply wash it off and start anew!
