Invest in Your Health
Most Canadians enjoy a pretty cushy health care system. It is true that we suffer through long waiting times, especially for specialized treatments, surgeries and/or medication. But, comparatively we fare quite well. Unfortunately, no structure is 100% stable. On February 7th, the CBC reported that possible changes to Canada’s drug patent system could add to prescription drug plan costs.
It’s important to maintain a bit of self-reliance and to invest in your own health. Expend energy and incorporate active living into your daily life, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or walking to destinations that are within reasonable distances. Try to distress by engaging in meditation, joining a yoga class or reading a book, and be sure to get some sleep! Prevention really is the best medicine.
When appropriate, introduce natural alternatives to prescription drugs, such as this get-well drink Father Miser and I rely on throughout the winter whenever we feel a cold coming on:
- 1 tsp of shredded ginger
- 1 tsp of honey
- 2 tbsp of lemon juice
- 1 ounce shot of brandy (optional)
- 2 cups of boiling water
Mix all ingredients into a large mug and pour in boiling water. Drink the content (including the chunks of ginger left at the bottom of the cup) while it’s hot.
By taking care of yourself you can avoid the cost of medications, as well as the time lost living life when you are busy recuperating from an illness. Now that is a savvy investment!
